Playing music and making people laugh are two of Jack Black’s great talents and both are on display in this small but satisfying and enduring comedy. Black plays Dewy Finn, a substitute teacher at a private school who marches to the beat of his own drum, and, like a pied piper of rock music, helps his students follow his rock and roll path. Joan Cusack is a great foil to Finn as the school’s conservative principal and The White Lotus creator Mike White, who wrote the screenplay, plays Ned Schneebly in this rockin’ good film directed by Texas filmmaker Richard Linklater (Bernie, Dazed and Confused). This is a double bill of sorts as the musicians from the first You Rock! inclusive girls music camp will “open” for the movie at 7:30 pm. — Lisa Elliott
