Mary Poppins (Sing-A-Long)
1964 | G | Family, Musical | d. Robert Stevenson
Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke
45th Anniversary Screening
A flying British nanny changes the lives of two children, largely ignored by their disciplinarian banker father and loving but distracted suffragette mother. Aloof but charming, Mary Poppins, with or without jack of all trades Bert, takes the Banks kids on an assortment of unique outings and ultimately helps Mr. Banks put his own priorities in perspective. The classic Disney musical features lively songs, fine choreography, an animated chalk drawing, comedian Ed Wynn floating on a roof, and an Academy Award winning performance by Julie Andrews. The movie garnered four other Oscars and marks the final film appearances of character greats Arthur Treacher (butler in scores of Hollywood classics) and especially Jane Darwell (Ma Joad from The Grapes of Wrath) in a touching cameo as the bird woman. Though recently revived as a Broadway musical, the original remains inimitable.
